Empowering Your SLP Career With Teletherapy: Here’s What To Know

Brought to you by Presence

Teletherapy is more than a service delivery method; it’s a vehicle for accessible speech-language therapy and a gateway to career empowerment for speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Let’s take a closer look at remote speech-language therapy, why it’s gaining popularity in PreK–12 schools, and how SLPs can use it to level up their practice.

Understanding teletherapy

Remote speech-language therapy, or speech-language teletherapy, refers to synchronous speech-language services delivered using the Internet and a secure video-conferencing platform. As opposed to in-person service delivery, teletherapy transcends geographic boundaries by virtually connecting individuals to specialized care.

For SLPs, remote service delivery can be a solution to achieving much-needed work–life balance because it eliminates the need for daily commutes. Plus, teletherapy platforms may offer time-saving case management features so that SLPs can spend more meaningful time working with patients.

What research says about remote speech-language therapy

According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), remote speech-language therapy is an approved “primary mode of service delivery” and may “supplement in-person services.”

Research continues to support remote speech-language therapy as a viable modality for providing special education–related services to students with disabilities such as developmental delays and autism.1

How do remote speech-language evaluations work?

Remote evaluations can be conducted on secure platforms. They follow a standardized approach similar to in-person evaluations, with adaptations designed to support the virtual environment. Remote SLPs use a combination of online assessments, patient work samples, clinical observation via webcam, and record reviews to make eligibility determinations and appropriate programming recommendations.
