5 Career Transition Tips for CSD Professionals

Career transitions can happen at any point in your journey as a communication sciences and disorders (CSD) professional. Maybe you’re exploring a move from health care to schools, considering academia, aiming for a leadership role—or seeking a non–patient-facing opportunity altogether.

No matter the reason, one thing is clear: CSD professionals have the clinical expertise, communication skills, and adaptability to successfully shift into a variety of roles. Here’s how to confidently take that next step.

1) Reflect on Your Skills, Competencies, and Interests

Start by checking in with yourself. You are not just your credentials—you bring a full spectrum of life experience to the table.

Take stock of these areas of your life:

  • clinical knowledge and training
  • transferable skills from other jobs or volunteer work
  • personal passions and interests

Use tools like ASHA’s Job Seeker Toolkit to self-assess. A deeper understanding of your strengths can guide your career direction and highlight areas for growth.

2) Sharpen Your Skills Through Professional Development

Different roles require different competencies. Whether you’re switching settings or stepping into leadership, make sure you’re prepared.

3) Seek Mentorship or Coaching

You don’t have to go it alone. ASHA’s Career Transitions Mentorship Program connects SLPs with peer mentors who have at least 2 years of experience. The SLP and peer mentor work together over a 6-month journey. Other ASHA mentoring programs and the Leadership Academy are also excellent growth tools.

For more personalized guidance, consider working with a career or executive coach. Coaching can help with developing leadership skills, building confidence, and navigating mindset shifts like imposter syndrome.

4) Learn From Real-World Examples

You’re not the first to take this leap—so why not learn from those who’ve gone before you?

Listening to others’ journeys can inspire your own.

5) Prepare—and Go For It

Ready to make the move? Time to take action:

When you’re ready, trust your preparation—and take the leap.
