The Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for speech therapy services; services include evaluation and treatment of speech and language disorders, voice disorders, swallowing disorders, video fluoroscopy swallowing studies and videostroboscopy. Serves a resource for staff in dealing with participants with communication, speech, voice and swallowing difficulties. Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality service and patient satisfaction. Reports directly to manager of service line.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Using all information sources available, assesses participants swallowing, speech and language, and voice dysfunction and restorative potential. Performs written or electronic evaluations using clinical knowledge. *Determines patient and family needs related to cognition, swallowing, voice, speech and language function. Discusses with patient and family to identify patient goals and expectations. Develops a comprehensive care plan for each patient. *Plans and performs therapeutic interventions to restore function and enhance quality of life to the greatest extent possible. Plans individual therapy interventions. Establishes priority areas of treatment. Provides speech/voice therapy services to restore impaired speech, language, voice and swallowing. Establishes suitable and achievable treatment goal, which contain time frames. Will work in conjunction with providers to assess voice and swallowing function which may include engaging in multi-disciplinary clinics; such as tumor board and cleft palate. *Provides individual therapy for patients as needed or prescribed in the care plan. Performs the appropriate clinical tests and measurements to improve function whenever possible. Prepares the patient for treatment by explaining the treatment process and positioning for comfort, safety, and optimal response. *Performs appropriate documentation in all areas of care. Ensures completeness of documentation of all clinical services rendered to patients. Satisfactorily completes and maintains all discipline specific competencies. Maintains statistical records as required. *Determines equipment and supply needs and utilizes budget resources to obtain. Uses supplies and equipment economically. Adheres and complies with Geisinger Standards of Care. Performs other duties as required or assigned by Operations Manager for which the employee is qualified to perform. *Denotes essential job duties

SPEECH-LANGUAGE & AUDIOLOGY PRACTICES QUALITY ASSURANCE-Knowledge of established Quality Assurance (QA) procedures; ability to measure and assess Speech-Language Pathology practices to ensure their effectiveness as compared with a predefined acceptable range. HEALTHCARE REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT-Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare practices. CLINICAL POLICIES AND STANDARDS-Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards, policies and procedures relevant to function and organization. PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND CARE-Knowledge of and ability to assess ailments and injuries of patients and implement a treatment plan. HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY-Knowledge of healthcare industry's trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations and trendsetters. HEALTH INFORMATION DOCUMENTATION-Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods; ability to record medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results in written or electronic form.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology required. Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association required. Licensure or eligibility for license, by the State Board of Speech Therapy within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required. Minimum two years of experience required.
